Bodgers are a unique group of people. In a pile of junk that any other person would throw away, a bodger sees a treasure trove of usable parts. In a broken machine where repair seems unprofitable, a bodger sees an easy job. And in a fight anyone else would think hopeless, a bodger sees an angle that could give an advantage. Bodgers are mechanics who never had a manual, they simply learned through doing. As a result they can almost always adapt to problems with mechanikal devices of all sorts, and are invaluable as combat repair mechanics.
They apply the same principles to combat. In a fight bodgers use anything at their disposal, whether that be tools, teeth or boots, and they tend to think of combat methods that are out of the ordinary. In addition, they bring their improvisational skills in the shop to the way they fight. Constantly tinkering together the right device for the right moment, they adapt perfectly to suit their needs.
Bodge:
Bodgers excel at figuring out how to make the most useful thing out of what would seem like junk to anyone else. While these creations of theirs are never permanent, they usually function for long enough to get the intended job done.
As long as they have available spare parts and the right tools, Bodgers can make about anything they can come up with. Of course sometimes they will not have the correct tools, in which case they could also bodge those on the spot. Bodging takes one minute per level of complexity, and requires a steamo check that meets or beats the given DC, with examples on the table below.
Complexity |
Examples |
| Simple (DC 10) |
Spikes, small tools, spears, levers and pulleys |
| Ornate (DC 15) |
Caltrops, medium tools, swords, clockwork |
| Complex (DC 20) |
Spike trap, power tools, longbow, motor |
| Intricate (DC 25) |
Poison Dart trap, timed explosives, gun, prosthetic |
These are simply examples to guide the player and GM, since this open ended ability may keep the limitations from being clear. Larger and even more complex items
can be bodged, but the time of their creation, and the DC to make them is entirely dependent on the judgment of the GM.
Any bodged item carries a -2 penalty to all actions made with it, since it is not carefully crafted for its intended purpose. In addition, after 5 minutes of use, or four uses, there is a chance the item will fall apart. After this time, the bodger makes a saving throw for the item. When a throw is made to make sure the item is still together it is called a
stability check.
Improvisation: Any power with the improvisation keyword bonus applies the equipment bonus of a bodger's item set to its attack and damage rolls. To make these attacks, you must some gathered salvage.
Salvage: You must gather bits and scraps of lesser objects to make any Bodging checks. Salvaging can come from breaking down old items, or each time you take a short rest, you can take a look around for any usable salvage.
To bodge together an item, or make any other use of the bodge ability, you need to have a reasonable amount of salvage. The bodger has to have as many pounds of salvage on him as the item to be created weighs, and uses that much in the creation. In general, a bodger can make 3 or 4 uses of the bodge skill per salvage hunt.
You can still bodge without gathered salvage, if there is enough salvage available in the area. However, it takes drastically longer since you have to search and combine components. Bodging without readily available salvage takes three times as long.
